HeartWorks

We Build Hearts

A cure is in the works

HeartWorks is laser focused on CHD research and creating positive outcomes for people born with congenital heart defects. Through our revolutionary platform, we tap the best ideas and advance them through trials and onto therapies that give children and adults with CHD an opportunity to live fulfilling lives.

Heartfelt Thank You

Thank you Bev and Tom Porter for graciously hosting the Fall Board Meeting at Porter Family Vineyards and producing another vintage of HeartWorks wine. There is a limited amount of HeartWorks Release II available! All proceeds from HeartWorks wine sales are generously donated to back to our research. Claim the last bottles here. Cheers!

Mayo Clinic Research Study Seeking Single Ventricle Congenital Heart Disease Patients

Mayo Clinic researchers are seeking adults, ages 18 to 40, with single ventricle Congenital Heart Disease (CHD), in end-stage heart failure, to participate in a clinical trial. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an investigational stem cell product.

Study participation involves an initial visit with a skin biopsy and blood draw. The processing time for the skin biopsy is up to 12 months. If processing is successful and the participant meets the study’s criteria, the investigational stem cell product would then be administered into the heart via injections. Lifetime follow-up visits will be performed.

Travel reimbursement is available.

Baby with a congenital heart defect, HLHS.

1 in 100 are born with a congenital heart defect

Current funding for research and development is limited. Those born with severe congenital heart defects (CHD) are only offered palliative options by the current state of healthcare. 1 in 4 of those born with a CHD will require a life saving surgical procedure within their first year of life. Even with these interventions 50% of children born with CHD won’t make it to their fifth birthday.

Our team

We connect donors, physicians, scientists, researchers and manufacturing teams and empower them to find and develop the most advanced and promising products and technologies

11

World-class Institutions

Our expert institutional partners span North America. The HLHS Consortium is the worlds largest devoted only to congenital heart defects.

1000+

Donors

Over 1,000 people have donated their time, money, tissue and genetics to finding a cure for CHD. We are grateful for their contributions to our mission.

88

Research personnel

To date we have trained 88 external medical professionals across North America to collect and deliver stem cells for our clinical trials.

10

Clinical Collaborators

We work with 10 clinical collaborators across the consortium to ensure we are upholding the highest clinical standards.

28

Research Collaborators

Our 28 research collaborators are tasked with reviewing and upholding the research standards across sites.

10

Advisory Board Members

We’ve enlisted 10 of North America's top pediatric cardiologists and physicians to advise our active and upcoming research and clinical trials.

Our platform

Through donations we’ve created a team that is focused on cultivating a product innovation culture, maintaining a pipeline of innovation targeted to improve heart muscle strength and overall heart function to dramatically improve individual outcomes. We partner across an ecosystem of medical experts, institutional collaborators, and activated communities to ensure we are making continuous progress while evaluating bold ideas.

Bioengineered Cardiac Tissue

Bioengineered Cardiac Tissue produces contracting heart muscle cells that are genetically identical to the patient’s own body; a “seed” that can be planted in a failing heart to help re-build the weak muscle.

CardiaCord

CardiaCord is an autologous (self) cell-based product derived from the umbilical cord that has been shown in pre-clinical settings to stimulate native heart muscle cells to grow faster and bigger. It has been tested in a Phase I clinical trial for safety and is currently being tested in a multi-center Phase IIb clinical trial.
